A
Guide to Collecting Librariana
Norman D. Stevens Valerie
Oliver
ISBN: 0810818744
Publisher: Scarecrow
Press, Inc.
Pub. Date: May 1986
Quoted from the Larry
Nix site: Librariana
http://www.libraryhistorybuff.org/librariana.htm
In his book A Guide to
Collecting Librariana, Norman D. Stevens gives the following definition
of librariana:
"Those artifacts, including
but by no means limited to printed materials, that depict any aspect of
librarians, librarianship, and/or libraries; such artifacts, which are
most typically of an ephemeral nature, may be those produced or used by
librarians or libraries as well as those produced and used by others; they
include, in particular, representations of librarians, librarianship, and/or
libraries in the popular culture of society."
"Do read to someone. When
words are infused by the human voice, they come alive".

"Simple
Rules"
I
learned 2 things early on, my sister said.
The
first is don't blame people for being the way they are.
What's
the second? I said.
She
smiled.
If
they're really stupid she said, go ahead & blame them.
It's
a really simple philosophy, she added.
"Life
Plan"
I
asked her what she planned to do with her life & she said
she
was way beyond that point already.
I'm
just happy I remember to be there when it happens, she said.

The Library Hotel in New
York City is the first hotel ever to offer its guest over 6,000 volumes
organized throughout the hotel by the DDC. Each of the 10 guestrooms floors
honors one of the 10 categories of the DDC and each of the 60 rooms is
uniquely adorned with a collection of books and art exploring a distinctive
topic within the category or floor it belongs to.
My own comments:
Of course its a bit
expensive for most people earning a
library salary - so
that's why I have included a link to it
on the "gifts" page.
Maybe someone will consider a
gift certificate to
it "absolutely perfect" for YOU!
Or maybe some can

Books
and My Food:
Literary Quotations and
Original Recipes for Every Day in the Year
ISBN: 0877456046
Publisher: University
of Iowa Press
Pub. Date: August 1997
From the Publisher
Beginning on January
1 with a recipe for traditional English wedding cake referenced to Jane
Austen's Emma and continuing through December with a recipe for Christmas
pudding attributed to a quote from Charles Dickens, Books and My Food provides
readers the occasion to experience the gastronomic delights that inspired
novelists, poets, and playwrights. Drawn almost entirely from British sources,
the literary catalysts for these recipes include citations from Charlotte
Bronte, William Shakespeare, William Makepeace Thackeray, Ben Jonson, George
Eliot, Alfred Tennyson, and others. Recipes range across familiar British
fare from mutton chops, leg of lamb, and meat pies to tea cakes, custards,
puddings, porridge, and crumpets. Equally intriguing are the instructions
for more obscure sustenance such as rum omelets, sago-cream pudding. Shrovetide
pancakes, furmety, syllabub, dulcet creams, and an adaptation for curds
and whey. Finally, for the literary buff whose tastes run bravely to the
authentic dinners of old England, there are recipes for tongue and spinach,
frog leg patties, fried eels, and stewed snipe.

Giving gifts to Your
"Library"
Remember too: it is sometimes
fitting to purchase books or journal subscriptions, for a libraries collection
in memory or in "celebration" of someone or some event.
When my mom passed away,
my family decided to contribute a subscription for her Hosptial's Library
in Florida,
to a publication about
Diabetes Education, and when a dear nurse passed away at my own hospital,
I donated a book on Medical Humor in her memory, to our Library.
I also have purchased
videos, clocks, books etc. - and donated to our Library for the use of
staff and patrons.
And remember too: most
gifts to an organization are "tax deductible".
