Picture books provide an extraordinary opportunity to combine illustration and thoroughly researched text to introduce topics in the arts, health, literature, mathematics, science, and social science content areas. They can be used together with companion titles or as springboards to stimulate student interest. No longer just for children, picture books have matured in the last decade to become a format for all ages. Public Relations for School Library Media Programs:
500 Ways to Influence People and Win Friends for Your School Library Media Center
Helen F. Flowers
ISBN: 1555703208
Publisher: Neal-Schuman Publishers
Pub. Date: April  1998
From School Library Journal
As a former school librarian, Flowers knows all too well that media centers often find themselves far down on the list of priorities within a school system or community. This well-organized guide offers plenty of ideas and plans for action that should help remedy that situation. The author suggests that librarians cast a wide net in promoting their collections and facilities. Students, the most important catch of all, must be made aware of what the library has to offer; that it's not an "uncool" place to visit; and most of all, that it can be fun and useful. Flowers then moves on to strategies designed to gain the support of teachers and administrators, and, finally, of the community at large, including school-board members and legislators. Examples of flyers and memos are provided. Media specialists who need some help in creating an identity for their centers will certainly benefit from this thought-provoking book. Other library professionals might also find it useful if only for the myriad ideas intended to boost recognition of their institutions.-Carol Fazioli, The Brearley School, New York City, NY

From Booknews
Presents practical ideas on how to gain community support for library media services in elementary and secondary schools. Including samples of fliers, announcements, and display material, the chapters focus on promoting the library services among such populations as students, administrators, parents, and legislators. The Media Literacy Imperative
By Arli Quesada
Advances in communication technologies and changes in the ownership of America's mass media in recent years have created a world situation virtually without precedent. The massive amount of information available to us via the World Wide Web, the opportunities it provides for global communication, and its "free range" nature combine to create an open-ended tool that is both wonderful and fearful in its implications. While legislative measures such as the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act can provide a degree of safety for kids on the Internet, they cannot instill in students the critical eye necessary to be discerning evaluators of content.

Applying Research to Practice in the School Library Media Center
Nancy Pickering Pickering Thomas  Paula Kay Montgomery
ISBN: 1563086034
Publisher: Teacher Ideas Press
Pub. Date: February  1999
From School Library Journal
Access to and utilization of information has changed dramatically in recent years, directly impacting the role of library media specialists. Teachers are incorporating information skills into lessons and working closely with media specialists to provide activities that educate and challenge students on many levels. In response to this development, this intensive guide provides background in methods of instruction and delves into the research being done in the field of information-skills acquisition. First examining the historical role of library instruction, Thomas then describes a variety of approaches. A whole chapter is devoted to Kuhlthau's Information Search Process. The remaining chapters focus on individual learning styles, the impact of technology, and the role of today's library media centers. Well researched and logically organized, this is nevertheless an intimidating package that takes some effort to digest. School media specialists seeking to improve their academic understanding of the subject or desiring to support the need for increased instructional skills will benefit from this impressive resource and its extensive references.-Susan McCaffrey, Haslett High School, MI Copyright 2000 Cahners Business Information.

Partners in Learning: Students, Teachers, and the School Library: Grades 1-6
Ray Doiron  Judith Ann Davies
ISBN: 1563085526
Publisher: Libraries Unlimited, Incorporated
Pub. Date: January  1998
From School Library Journal
This book is relevant to librarians in training, working librarians, classroom teachers, and administrators. Doiron and Davies emphasize that all media specialists need to be considered as teacher-librarians. Supported by the school leadership, these professionals must work in partnership with classroom teachers to create a successful program. The authors spell out the need for a more integrated approach to teaching skills necessary for finding, accessing, evaluating, using, and sharing information. Strategies for building the partnership and involving students more fully in their learning are included along with planning guides, sample research projects, and evaluation tools. The advice given is practical and the projects are easy to replicate. There are tips for booktalks and successful silent reading programs. While this title focuses on elementary schools, many of the ideas could be used in middle and secondary schools as well. A useful resource for anyone involved in the process of educating the whole child.-Edith Ching, St. Albans School, Mt. St. Alban, Washington, DC

From Booknews
Offers a philosophy for library programs that involve a partnership of the teacher-librarian and the classroom teacher, and are supported by school district leadership. Describes the principles of resource- based learning and outlines a resource-based unit of study on owls that was completed by fourth graders. Offers examples of other units that promote literacy, activate the information process, or focus on resources. Annotation c. by Book News, Inc., Portland, Or.

A Quality School Library   - (California)
Excerpt from
Element
What is a quality school library?
Every school must provide school library services to meet the teaching and
learning needs of the school community.  A quality school library media center is
an integral part of a balanced reading program. In a balanced reading program,
students develop literacy skills and extend these skills to develop information literacy
by accessing, evaluating, and using information from a variety of resources.
A quality school library media center is essential to student success in meeting District and State standards.

Excerpt:
CONCLUSIONS
The findings of this study provide evidence needed to answer three major questions about the impact of school library media centers and academic achievement.
1. Is there a relationship between expenditures on LMCs and test performance, particularly when social and economic differences between communities and schools are controlled?

Yes. Students at schools with better funded LMCs tend to achieve higher average reading scores, whether their schools and communities are rich or poor and whether adults in the community are well or poorly educated.

2. Given a relationship between LMC expenditures and test performance, what intervening characteristics of library media programs help to explain this relationship?

The size of the LMC's total staff and the size and variety of its collection are important characteristics of library media programs which intervene between LMC expenditures and test performance. Funding is important; but, two of its specific purposes are to ensure adequate levels of staffing in relation to the school's enrollment and a local collection which offers students a large number of materials in a variety of formats.

3. Does the performance of an instructional role by library media specialists help to predict test performance?

Yes. Students whose library media specialists played such a role tended to achieve higher average test scores.
